What exactly is Nooch and how should I use it?

I have been a plant eater since I was a teenager but I only heard my now beloved word “Nooch” as an adult.

When I first heard it I thought, “What the heck is Nooch? And why have I never heard of it?”

So, I thought I would do a quick breakdown in this post for new or old vegans on the basics of Nooch.

What exactly is Nooch?


Nooch is Nutritional Yeast. Nutritional yeast is a species of fungus called, Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Is Nutritional yeast like the yeast I use to bake Bread?

Sort of, Nutritional yeast is similar except it has been deactivated by being heat treated.

How does it look?

  1. Flakes 2. Powder form 3. Granules Form

Why is it good for you?

Nutritional yeast is an excellent source of B Vitamins and some are even fortified with B12 (a kind of vitamin found in animal food products) making it a wonderful option for vegans.

2 Tbsp of nutritional yeast is typically equivalent to 4 grams of fiber and 9 grams of a complete protein.

2 Tbsp is very easy to eat a day!

Plus it’s pack with antioxidants.

How do I use it?

Once you start using Nutritional yeast. you will begin to find so many options of how to use it daily. I sprinkle it in soups, add it to my risotto, make my vegan “Mac & Cheese” , use it in my spinach dip, and more.
